2nd Meeting of the Caribbean Wetlands Initiative,July 4-9, 2011, Bonaire. The meeting was organized by the Ramsar Convention on wetlands with the following objectives: to follow-up on the commitments established during the first meeting, prepare a proposal to finance the Initiative’s action plan, as well as identify activities for the Pan-American meeting that will be held in Jamaica in December of 2011 and the Conference of the Parties (COP11) in Romania in June of 2012. The IAC gave a presentation on the Convention’s activities in the Caribbean and their relation to Ramsar sites associated with sea turtle nesting beaches and foraging grounds in the Americas and Caribbean region. As a result, the participants identified possible synergies and ways for the two Conventions to collaborate and recommended that the two Conventions sign a Memorandum of Understanding/Cooperation to facilitate information exchange on topics like the interconnectedness between sea turtles and Ramsar sites and the possibility of designating Ramsar sites based on their importance as nesting sites for critically endangered species of sea turtles. The Contracting Parties that are also party to the Initiative participated in the meeting (Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Surinam) in addition to representatives from Non Contracting Parties, French and United Kingdom overseas territories and autonomous countries within the Kingdom of Holland. Furthermore, representatives from International Organizations associated with Ramsar and regional experts particiapted as observers.
